“somnilogue” is a coined word, which means a conversation (but not only dialogue, sometimes monologue) in falling sleep, something like a pillow talk or a telling story for child to sleep, that is tend to lack of meanings or contexts. You may think the word is in term of something similar as automatism. Automatism is concerning with subject of subconsciousness or unconsciousness, in contrast somnilogue focuses in an utterance as physical situation in falling sleep. I regard the situation as tweeting of natural body, well up vocal, that is no matter for conscious or unconscious. As the acoustic feature, the utterance would draw a gentle envelope curve of tone and volume.

In “ somnilogue and ancient tapir”, the telling story for child to sleep is about ancient tapir which had prospered tens of millions of years ago, and other hand a tapir has a myth of dream. On this situation, the talker also fell to sleep with her child too, cause by leading her gentle utterance.
I composed two kind of sound materials and superimposed them. One is abstracted specific frequencies and rhythm pattern (location at timescale) in talking of somnilogue. The other is made by pure waves which were mimicries of a call of contemporary tapir as mimesis of ancient or legendary tapir. The arrangement on time base is based on some situation likes a call of other creature. I imagined the music composition is for a crosspoint for each other in a dream filed.

This piece is made by an influence under “AUTOMATIC WRITING” which is a master piece of Robert Ashley. I heard that piece in the early 80s, after that, from time to time, I was thinking about a natural situation destroying the relationship with utterance experience and control of it. Eventually I made this piece to look for that situation.
I firstly made these sound materials as acoustic effect for an installation piece by Yuka Yamato, then reconstructed as a compositional piece of mine.


somnilogueとは造語である。意味を伝えるための会話ではなく、眠りに落ちていくときのやや文脈を欠いた発話を意味する。20世紀初頭に流行ったオートマティズムという視点に近いが、オートマティズムが無意識や潜在意識を意図しているのに対して、somnilogueでは意識の有無ではなく身体的な発声が自然に発露する状況として、眠りに落ちていくときの語りの状態に着目している。それは他愛もなく取り留めない半分眠りかけの会話の状況であり、わたしはそれを緩やかなエンペローグを描く口述音響として捉えている。

子どもを寝かしつける素話。睡眠へと誘う目的で語られるのは、夢と結びついた数千万年前に繁栄を誇った古生物のバクの話。その穏やかな口述により話者自身もまた子供と一緒に眠りへと誘われていく。
作曲作品『somnilogue and ancient tapir(睡眠語りと古生物のバク)』では2種類の音響構成が重なり合っている。ひとつはsomnilogue としての枕元の声の音高と語りのリズムという発話成分から抽出した音響である。もうひとつは現代のバクの鳴き声の模倣として純音を合成し文脈的関連のある発声のタイミングに配置した想像上のバクの鳴き交わしである。夢という場でバクにまつわる2つの音響が交差する音楽作品として作曲した。

この作品はロバート・アシュレイの”AUTOMATIC WRITING”の影響を受けている。80年代初頭に聞いて以来、ことあるごとに頭をよぎった発話と制御とその関係が自然に崩れる状況を改めて作品として定着させようと考えて制作したものである。
この作品は大和由佳の展示用の音響効果として作った音を再構築して制作した。
